While I enjoyed reading how the instructors in the article used their smart board, I believe that we have a great learning environment within our school system that can continue to help us all learn fluid and energetic lessons for our students. We can take the ideas that are shared in the article with the lessons that have been shared in class to tailor lessons that "fit" with our students and our curriculum.
\n
\nI have watched the engagement of the students over the past few months as I have used the smart board. At first they were content to sit passively and watch. Now they want to jump in and take a turn with the technology. It is a reminder to me that we can not just use this tool to present and model information for the students. We must plan to actively engage the students in the technology or will lose impact.
\n
\nI know that the more that I use the smart board, the more comfortable I am becoming with it. When it doesn't work quite the way that I planned, instead of throwing my hands into the air and thinking "oh, well", I am beginning to understand the how that it works and problem solve. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't! The kids are always ready to lend a plan that might work!
\n
\nI have only used the smart board for whole group instruction and practice. I am planning ways that I can use it in small group setting so they can present their learning to the class. It does indeed take time and planning. But, one good idea can create others. I hope that we can keep the conversations that I have heard while taking this class about our use of the smart boards in the classroom going beyond the end of the month. It occurs to me that some students will be pulled in by the novelty of a new approach and perhaps those that wouldn't ordinarily pay attention. The founder of Facebook said his goal was to create a communication network that was broad and shallow. I think in general our young people, students, many at least, are beginning to go in the direction. This new tool that is facilitating technology may be our way of getting the shallow and broad to go a little deeper, if we plan the lesson correctly. That is what came to mind before I even finished the first paragraph of this article. Just as students need to continue to move forward in their learning, teachers have to be open to moving forward in their techniques as well. Using interactive whiteboards can help us to bridge the gap between traditional teaching methods and the reality of the impact of technology in our world today.
\n
\nThe article pointed out many positive aspects of incorporating technology in the classroom including students being more engaged, opportunities for real-time responses to unanticipated questions, and students feeling more empowered over their learning. While these things are true, I think students and teachers can also get too caught up in the "fun" aspect of technology. It definitely adds interest and excitement to lessons, but taking the time to make technology use meaningful and helpful to learning can be a challenge. Ample time for planning real lessons and activities for students is the key for successful integration of the technological tools we have been given.

Some of the items that were mentioned, I wasn't even sure what they did. As I read, however, I could sense the enthusiasm of the teachers that were using the technology in their classrooms, and the excitement that they were able to translate to their students.
\n
\nTechnology doesn't make a good teacher, nor does it take the place of good planning. I was happy to see that the article brought this up. As I was reading, I saw how each teacher was planning with the end in mind (what they wanted the children to learn), and used the technologies to facilitate that. Use of the Smart board, etc, would definitely engage a class, as this is the world that they live in.
\n
\nThis brings me to another point, though. What if this is not part of your world as a teacher? I'm not that old, but I feel "left behind" in the technology world, and struggle with how I get the support needed to learn these new technologies. This concern of mine certainly makes me sensitive to my students when I am teaching them a new concept: introduce in steps, give them time to process new information, and then provide support and help for them as they begin to master these concepts. It's not enough to throw the technology at us, and make us learn it on our own time. "Education is about movement. Classrooms are energetic and facilitated by leaders that know when to step back and let the learners show the way." I think this was a great way to describe an effective classroom. Teachers and students are working together to keep the content interesting showing best practice.
\n
\nI appreciated how Kathleen Moylan always incorporates choice with her content units. The students have project choices that align with their personal learning styles. As teachers we need to be reflective and think about the students' needs as well as the content. When given choices the students have so much more ownership and produce truly amazing work.
\n
\nThe article reminds us of several teachable moments and gives us the tools to find unanswered questions. Students need to become effective at finding the answers to questions and this technology allows lessons to widen. When students do not understand something they have information at their fingertips, giving them the tools to problem solve is much more effective then providing all the right answers.
\n
\nTechnology "hooks" the students and helps them take charge of their learning. The content is much better digested when students are creating meaningful projects with real world applications than simply finding answers in a textbook. As educators we need to keep moving forward and consider the needs of our students in jobs that do not even exist yet. We need to provide them with the experiences that produce the problem solving skills and creativity that they all have.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"32599952","body":"I liked your line, let the learners lead the way. \nThey did have an example in the article involving 9th grade students. They were asked to come up to the board to search websites for a project.
